I came here with the recommendation of my colleagues. They said this is where you go for breakfast. And I can say they were right. They don't cheap out on the amount of food they give you. Fresh eggs and chorizo...and a ton of it. Tasty and at a great deal. Definitely recommended for breakfast.
El Palenque Taqueria
About this place
El Palenque Taqueria occupies a modest storefront on North Kingston Street in San Mateo, California, with seating for around fifteen people and a straightforward counter-serve setup that keeps the focus squarely on the food. It has become a neighborhood favorite for anyone who wants real taqueria cooking without the wait or the fuss of a full-service restaurant.
The Super Quesadilla, filled with fresh avocado, is one of the most requested items on the menu, and the carnitas draw regular comparisons as some of the best in the area. Lengua tacos and burritos appear frequently in reviews alongside the Pollo Asado Burrito and Carne Asada y Camarones for anyone who wants surf and turf in one order. The Prawn Quesadilla, Huevos Rancheros, and a hefty Wet Burrito round out a menu built for sharing — portions run large enough that two people can split a single burrito comfortably.
The dining room stays simple, with limited seating and a casual, drop-in atmosphere that suits a fast lunch more than a lingering dinner. Many regulars take orders to go and eat along the nearby San Francisco Bay Trail, a short walk from the restaurant. It's a solid choice for a quick, satisfying meal, a late-night bite after a flight into nearby SFO, or a simple lunch break away from the office.

Food is super cheap and delicious. Service is fast. This place is small, but can't beat the price. Bring cash, they charge extra for using credit card.
Our go to for fresh mexican food. While there's seating, we generally do take out. Decent selection of your staples, but all great tasting.
Probably the best carnitas burrito I've had in 20 years. Hidden gem. A must eat every time I'm passing through, now.
Food is well served and taste really goods service is really fast and we’re very kind and friendly.

April 2026:Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Tried the al pastor regular burrito 🌯 and was very happy with my meal.Good proportion of rice, beans and meat. Tasty burrito.Service was friendly. They gave us chips and three kinds of salsa. Would definitely come back again for more delicious Mexican food.
Camera did not eat first so no pictures, but let that be proof this place is worth every bite. We got the carne asada plate, which given the current economy, is a bang for your buck. One dinner plate is enough for two people, or a few meals if you like leftovers. Each plate comes with rice, beans, salad, avocado, a small serving of chips, about 5 tortillas, and your typical salsa trio. I’m excited to add this place to my rotation of takeout options. Give it a try and know you won’t be disappointed.
